AFP stands for alpha-fetoprotein, a glycoprotein normally produced by fetal liver and yolk sac. After birth, levels are typically very low, but in adults it can be produced by rapidly dividing hepatocytes in certain liver tumors (hepatocellular carcinoma) or by some germ cell tumors. That link to rapidly dividing hepatocytes in adults is why this description fits AFP best: it reflects its use as a tumor marker and the source of production in malignant liver tissue. It is not a lipid from adipose tissue, a hormone from the pituitary, or an enzyme from the pancreas.
